Rigid Nordic long bike frame and girder project

by Rebel
(Colorado)

I received a non running Yamaha 850 triple as a gift. Parts don't exist other then rare finds in salvage yards. I plan to build a jig and make a rigid Nordic long bike frame and girder.

Right now I have to buy the tools needed. I retired from the Navy where I had access to the auto hobby shop and all the tools I need. Now I have a socket set, a few screwdrivers, and not much else. So I've been hitting auctions looking for a welder, and everything else.

But I have also been gathering up parts at on line auctions. I'm currently in a bidding war for a king and queen seat.

I'll keep everyone posted with progress, slow as it may be.

"odd bike to build. I hope you dont break down in the middle of no where."
by: Anonymous

It is something you don't see chopped every day. I've never seen one chopped. That is what appeals to me with this. I've built and rebuilt a pan head every wenter for about ten years. I've chopped a generator shovel, and a bunch of nose cone shovels, and even more iron head sportsters. And a couple British twins, and you'll get the picture. It is impossable to do anyting to a harly that doesn't look cool. I even painted a sportster yellow and it passed. Same with the Norton. You can have an ugly BSA. Mine was a collection of styling mistakes. But it still attracted the woman I've been with for over thirty years.

And you can "build" these bikes by just buying stuff and bolting it on. I can't buy any chopper parts for that 850. I like the chalange. If it works out, I will be prouder of this then any other bike I have owned.

I want it for long rides. I hope to use it on the horse magazine long ride after about a year of shake down folling compleation. Yes, most of my bagage will be parts. I won't just be able to call the local dealer and have them ship what I need to what ever town the tow truck drops me off at.

pawn shops and cregs list and auctions oh my
by: Rebel

I've been watching cregs list, and checking out pawn shops. Just going trough some web sites this morning. I may be better off getting welding equeptment at farm auctions. Still checking them out.

Does airgas sell hobby grade used welders?

If I buy new, I think I'll go with harbor fright.

If no one else bidds, and the bidding has stalled, I may have a re covered king and queen seat. That will require a three bar sissy bar. that would go well with the three theme.
