My CB 750 Custom Chopper Project

cb 750 custom chopper

cb 750 custom chopper

I always wanted a Harley...and I started considering a loan, but after stepping out of a dealer I realized I could not get most of my salary for the monthly payments alone (financing is just crazy around here...52% year rate). So I hit the ground and almost forgot about it. Suddenly, I saw an add for an old bike. A 1978 CB750 model K, and it had an already chopped frame!

To make things shorter I rented a van and drove 4,000 miles back and forward to get the thing.

It fired after two kicks, needed a tune up (which no shop around here dared to attempt, so I really studied hard and did it myself...getting the jets alone was hellish).

After the excitement of getting a cool cheap ride vanished, I realized I could change a few things here and there. So after 3 years I have changed the front end (It´s a hardtail, and the forks didn´t had that much compression, even though I changed the oil), made an oil tank out of a 5" pipe, made a V bar with a friend´s welding skill´s help, and made an internal throttle which I haven´t finished yet.

Well, it still has many things undone. It is not a Harley, but I have an efficient machine (the thing is almost 30 years old, it hasn´t been touched yet, and compression is still good!)

It's a cool ride for a lot less that the Harley dealer asked for, and a whole a lot less than the 10,000 US dollars that a chopper shop asked for a rebuild.

Great Bikes
by: Drew

Always loved CB750 choppers with the springers or girders. I built a long bike using an 80in Evo motor and now have a line to a CB750 real cheap that I can't pass up. Gonna do a budget build but it will have more character than any $20-60,000 bike. Gotta love all things built in someones garage!

wicked machine!
by: yellowduc

Horatio, this beats a Harley any day. Any douchebag can get a Harley... and then pay a top dollar builder to pimp it out.

Sonny Barger, the former head of Hell's Angels in Oakland had great things to say about Japanese bikes. Back in his day, they were more expensive than H-Ds, and harder to work on, though they never required much work. H-Ds did require lots of work, but they were at least cheap and easy to fix.

A$$holes who rant about Harleys are what are known as Rolex Riders. Let 'em waste buckets of cash on them. The playing field is level between H-Ds and 'metric' bikes these days anyway. But the hottest choppers back in the day were all CB750s.

I've been thinking about building my own CB750 chopper, and you've totally inspired me!

Yeah send us a picture of your brand new SUV...you are probably a successful professional with lots of plastic money...not that I really care but I had nothing to do now so I just wanted to reply and to waste some time...like you do

My Gas tank
by: Anonymous

Hey jay,

Well the tank was provided (Installed and functioning) with the bike when I bought it, I've tried to find out as well, the bike had already lots of modifications on: Rigid Frame (A bit twisted I might say, I haven't been able to get rid of some bobbling over 80 mph, I have tried several adjustments to the rear wheel, balancing, also forn end changes, changed bearings, etc) 45 rake degree, spring solo seat, and such...
Send me your e-mail I've seen some similar to mine, I will forward you the vendor address

Good luck!

Horacio

I know what ya mean about things being quite expensive. That bike is cool in everyway and the fact tha it's a Honda powered machine doesnt hurt the coolness at all. Good job, Hope you keep the wind in your face for a long time on that bad ride.☠☠

Diamond In The Rough
by: Mark

Greetings And Good Day To You Horacio. Horacio, as you can tell by the comments a lot of us old school chopper fans find your bike very interesting. Can you leave a comment back on you bike as more information about our bike? What type of exhaust do you have installed? The size of the rear tire, type rear tire rim. Is the front wheel a drum or disk brake? Find a way to put some more pictures on the internet of your bike and give us a link. Keep up the good work. ON thre right side of the engine, it looks like a Z shaped bar, what is it?

Hurray for Jap Scrap
by: rider75 in Canada

Hola Hector,
A pretty cool looking old Honda amigo! Home garage built choppers rule! Keep on with it. I remember when 55 to 57 Chevy cars were beginning to climb in price as more people hotrodded them. There were plenty of four door sedans around but nobody wanted the 4 doors, only the 2 door models. Now the 4 door cars are worth just as much. Same goes for old Jap bikes. I recently picked up my Kawasaki project bikes from an auto wrecker in trade for an old car that did not run.
I am still in the process of stripoping and cleaning the old '76 KZ750 Twin and am not yet sure if I will go for the cafe Racer look, the Bobber look, or go all out with a cycle One rigid frame. Even going full out rigid custom, the finished bike will be at most 2 to 3 thousand dollars. Try building a Yankee bike for that!

Howsit.

I like what you have done to the CB750. Im busy building a rigid frame CB550 bobber. Mainly because I cant afford a harley too and being in South Africa doesn't help the effort :-)

Good luck and it is looking good.

WOW! Great ride!
by: Doug Lyons

That's a sweet bike. When I was young, a CB750 was a very prized possession and everyone wanted one. Don't worry if it's not a Harley. The latest thing is chopping a metric bike. There is a builder here in town that does nothing but metric (Honda)customs. He puts out some awsome stuff, but none as nice as your's is. Keep up the good work and post pictures of your progress. I'm looking forward to seeing your bike when it is done.
Thanks,
Doug Lyons
